Harvey Warren Trust New Years Day Wheelbarrow Race 2019

Fundraising Events

The 2019 Harvey Warren Trust New Years Day Wheelbarrow race was a huge success and we were blessed with SUNSHINE!!

It was wonderful to see teams and spectators returning from previous years and to be joined by new faces and some spectacular fancy dress.

There was a competitive spirit from there start as we put the two or three lap option to the vote and we were surprised by the number of contestants who vociferously endorsed the three lap option which makes the course a full mile. This was greeted by a few groans but all the teams assembled on the start line with enthusiasm.

As the familiar sound of ‘Chariots of fire’ was heard, Harvey’s Grandmother started the race and the wheelbarrows took to the track. The speed of some of the teams was impressive and certainly made a few of us regret the previous nights excesses as we struggled to keep up!

There were a fantastic number of spectators cheering everyone on including our dog who insisted on getting into our wheelbarrow, the extra weight making me realise that he is no longer a puppy !
I’m pretty sure we were lapped at some point but it was a delight to see so many happy faces and hear a lot of encouragement and banter.

When we had all eventually crossed the finish line, it was time for the prize giving.

Following this, it was time for the customary Chilli and Gluwhein (and hot dogs and juice for our younger participants!)

It was great to have so many people from near and far getting together and chatting and starting the New Year with a bit of fun and a chance to meet other local families.

A huge thank you to all who came alone to participate or spectate and we very much hope that we we see you all again next year and please bring your friends and families. Your support, fundraising and donations were amazing.

We are also so very grateful for all that help us put on the event. This year, the wheelbarrows were very kindly loaned to us from Inexcess, without which we wouldn’t even have an event. It is fantastic to be given the use of the Hampton Park Pavilion and we wholeheartedly thank the trustees. Once again, Spencer Mulholland from the Salisbury Journal was there to cover the event and take some fantastic photographs which you will see below, we are so grateful for the continued support and coverage and it is always great to see Spencer and ever thankful for his help in getting us in to some sort of order for the start !

Our tremendous thanks to all of the local companies who donated prizes; their generosity is incredible and their support invaluable, they are as follows in no particular order:

  • InExcess
  • Salisbury Arms Craft Bar
  • Cambridge Wines
  • Salisbury Escape Rooms
  • Market Inn

  • Sainsbury’s
  • Byron Burgers

All of these kind donations helped us raise over £500 for this years event and we can’t thank you enough.
