Wheelbarrow race 2020: The Results!

Fundraising Events

What an amazing day we had to welcome in 2020 with the 6th Harvey Warren Trust Wheelbarrow Race, we didn’t have any rain which was great but what was absolutely amazing was the number of people who turned up to participate, spectate and join in.

INEXCESS had kindly lent us a dozen wheelbarrows and these were snapped up in no time, but in the true spirit of the event, participants agreed to share and offered other children to hop in for a lap.

As everyone gathered for the start, Spencer from the Salisbury Journal took the opportunity to take some pictures of the fabulous fancy dress which people had put together, it is fantastic to see how much time and effort people put into this and it really does add to the fun of the occasion.

As the sound of Chariots of Fire began to play, the teams were ready for the off and when the gun went, last years winners and runners up set off at record pace and it was tiring just to watch !

Soon the Green was surrounded by wheelbarrows and there was a lot of cheering from spectators to spur the runners on. In between laps, those who hadn’t been able to have a wheelbarrow or didn’t have a team were able to hop in or push as people swapped over in great spirit. Others ran round in support and took over pushing to give people a rest.

As the horn signalled each team crossing the finish line there was cheering and congratulations from all assembled.

We all then retired to the Pavillon for Chilli, hot dogs, Gluwhein and juice prior to the prize giving and a general get together. Once again it was so nice for so many local people and visitors to get together, have fun and meet new people too.

The winners of the three categories were as follows:

  • Most sponsorship raised and also joint 1st place was this year shared between – Team ‘The Queen’ comprising of Damien and Gracie Chorlton and Team ‘Supersmith’ comprising on Ben, Felicity and Jacob Smith.
  • Best dressed team and barrow – Team ‘Captain Mermaid’ comprising of Neil Green, Amy Green and Sophie Somers

Fantastic efforts by you all and well done.

All other competitors had also put on a fantastic show of fancy dress and put in considerable effort in completing the course.

The spirit of the whole event was amazing and we look forward to continuing year on year.

We would very much like to thank all that attended, participated or watched from afar, you make this all happen and it we couldn’t be more grateful.

We could also not of course put this on without INEXCESS who very kindly loan us the wheelbarrows and who are happy to lend us more wheelbarrows for next year and as many as we need. If you are planning on coming along next year then please do let us know in advance and we will put you down for one.

The prizes for our three categories and the raffle were once again donated by many local businesses and we cannot thank them enough for their generosity and hope that days out, meals out and other prizes won were enjoyed.

These were the prizes which were provided and thank you to all the businesses involved.

We are also so very grateful for Sainsbury’s of Salisbury for providing us with the winners prizes of wine and chocolate as they have year on year.

It was of course fantastic to have Spencer from the Salisbury Journal to help keep us in order and take some wonderful photographs and all credits are due there. Spencer has been an absolute rock since we started this event and we cannot thank him enough.

Also it was once again so great to be granted the use of the Hampton Park Pavillion and we are truly grateful to the trustees who permitted this. It’s wonderful to be able to utilise a centrepiece of our local area for a community and charitable gathering so thank you again.

Thank to everyone again for making it such a special day.
